In 2020 Yawp! Cyclery will be offering its fourth annual Brevet (pronounced bru-vay). It used to be called the Randonnee-nae, but we changed the name to Brevet New World because it better suits our catalog of rides based on literary puns, and because it's easier to spell.
We'll adhere to the traditional rules of a brevet; there may be controls at which riders are required to have their passports stamped, there will be a minimum and maximum speed, and we will ride a minimum of 200 kilometers. A brevet is not a race; riders strive to finish a course within a specified time, and receive equal recognition regardless of finishing order. Riders can ride alone or in groups, and are expected to be self-sufficient.
With that said, keep in mind that a brevet is kind of like an arctic exploration; the goal isn't to be the first one to return, but to do what you can to make sure everyone on the exploration makes it back. You aren't responsible for anyone else, but it'd be real swell if you helped a fellow participant in need.
Therefore, please plan to remain at the finish line until 8:30pm (the cutoff time) to cheer on everyone who completes Brevet New World.
There will be an entry fee of $15. Administrative costs for this event have grown beyond our means, so a portion of this fee will go toward your rewards, should you finish, and the remainder will be donated to charity. (In 2018 we raised over $700 for Bicycle Colorado, and over $500 for WTF Bike Explorers in 2019).
If snow or severe rain is forecast, we may reschedule. We want to ride this ride, but the bike shop gets wildly busy in the summer (or let's hope it will), and we can't promise that our schedule will accommodate a rain date. We bring all of this up to say that whether the ride does or does not occur as scheduled, we'll be donating your entry fee to charity regardless.
The course is not marked, and despite being luddites ourselves, we begrudgingly recommend using a GPS device for navigation. The route is almost entirely off of streets, so cue sheets won't help. If you don't have or don't want to use a GPS device, we'll have maps for sale at the bike shop that we'd be happy to mark the route on for you. The 2020 course will be the same as it was in 2019. You can see and download it here (you’ll need to have a Ridespot account to download the .gpx file).
This is a self-supported ride. There are gas stations near the route, so if your body runs well on Slim Jims and hot Cheetos, you're in luck.
You will receive a finisher's prize. To register, click here!
