BREVET NEW WORLD
BREVET NEW WORLD
ATTENTION: The Brevet has been postponed because of weather. It is now taking place on Saturday, May 4th.
In 2024 Yawp! Cyclery will be offering its eighth annal Brevet (pronounced bru-vay). We'll adhere to the traditional rules of a brevet; there may be controls at which riders are required to have their passports stamped, there will be a minimum and maximum speed, and we will ride a minimum of 200 kilometers. A brevet is not a race; riders strive to finish a course within a specified time, and receive equal recognition regardless of finishing order. Riders can ride alone or in small groups, and are expected to be self-sufficient. Brevet New World will start at 7am on Saturday, May 4th.
The course is not marked, and despite being luddites ourselves, we begrudgingly recommend using a GPS device for navigation. The route is almost entirely off-street, so cue sheets won't help.
The route will be the same as last year, and you can view/download it here. The route will include many miles of paved bike path, but also some fairly rugged dirt. We’d recommend riding a bike that can accommodate a gravel tire that’s at least 35mm wide.
This is a self-supported ride. There are gas stations near the route, so if your body runs well on Slim Jims and pickled cheese, you're in luck.
You will receive a finisher's prize if you finish the route in the allotted time.
There will be food and drinks at the finish line from 4-10pm. There won’t be any chairs, though, so if you like sitting in chairs BYOC.
BREVET NEW WORLD FAQ
Where do I sign up?
Will the course be marked?
No. The course is not marked, and despite being luddites ourselves, we begrudgingly recommend using a GPS device for navigation. The route is almost entirely off of streets, so cue sheets won't be of help.
Will there be a drop bag service?
Nope.
What if I start but decide I can't finish?
No big deal. You can bail at any point. You may want to have a friend on call just in case—there is no sag wagon.
How long do I have to finish the ride?
You have 13.5 hours to ride the entire Brevet New World. That means 8:30pm. However, we’ll hang out at the finish line until 10pm, and no matter what time you finish you can still have a patch.
Can I be a jerk?
Nope! Please remember that you’ll be riding your bike (all day!) on paths and trails that are open to the recreating public. They’ll be walking dogs, pushing strollers, and wandering all over the place “Tubthumping” playing at full volume in their earbuds. Please make every single one of them aware of your presence, give them space, and be kind.
Is this a group ride?
No. Most of the rides that we offer here at Yawp! are group rides, but because this ride is lengthy, riders need to be able to ride at their own pace.
Why would I do this?
Anyone who rides 200km is given the title of "Randonneur." They carry that title for life! Who wouldn't want that? Also, because bikes, beer, etc. You'll also get a finisher's patch.
